Maybe you're already dead-set on experiencing the glory of racing for Rice in an IRONMAN. Maybe you're just trying to get ready for Beer Bike, or want to break your 5K record. Maybe you aren't sure at all about this RUCT thing and don't know why you're here. No matter what category you fall in to, you are welcome to show up to any of our events to give it a try! No fee is required to participate in the club's practices and campus events, and we encourage anyone curious to do so!
Our practice schedule is posted every semester on our club Instagram account and in our Slack, which we recommend joining if you want regular updates on training, nutrition orders, races, and more! See the links at the bottom of the page.
We host several group swim, bike, and run practices every week throughout the school year, open to anyone regardless of their skill level. These are a great way to train and meet other people in the club!
Swim practices usually take place in the Rice Rec pool. Runs are usually on the running track or around campus. Group rides are usually on the bike track, with longer off-campus rides into Houston on weekends.
The fun doesn't stop there! Every semester, RUCT hosts a number of collegiate events and competitions open to anyone on campus. These include a semesterly on-campus triathlon race, an annual century (100 mile) ride, and the long-anticipated intercollegiate Track Championships.
Join the Slack for updates on when these will take place!
The racing doesn't end at the hedges though. Our team regularly travels to compete in cycling and triathlon races across Texas and the greater South against other collegiate and professional teams. While these are a step up in intensity from on-campus competitions, these races are a great way to build racing proficiency and bond with other club members. They're also super fun.
Races are also open to anyone (we don't do tryouts), and many offer different categories to accomodate varying skill levels. It should be noted that paying club dues is required for RUCT to reimburse race costs. If you don't, you're more than welcome to compete, but you'll have to pay for your own race. Join the Slack for more details!
In collegiate cycling and triathlon races, RUCT competes against other university teams within the SCCC conference (A&M, TXST, UT, etc). Because they are limited to collegiate riders, these events are great for building race skills and are recommended for people looking to get into competing. They are also lower cost than larger USAC races.
USAC cycling races are larger and open to anyone, and as such are generally much more intense race environments. These are a fantastic challenge for riders looking to gain points and level up official racing categories.
This also includes track cycling races, which RUCT does at Alkek Velodrome in Houston.
Generally considered to be one of the most physically and mentally demanding races in the world, RUCT regularly has athletes compete in both half and full IRONMAN triathlons in Waco, Dallas, the Woodlands, and more!
It should be noted that the club rarely pays for these, but will help with accommodations.
